Market Enterprise continues to take on various challenges to play a role in promoting the development of a circular economy, aiming to realize a sustainable society. Through the businesses of each of our group companies, we contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in September 2015.

About the SDGs

The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are international goals comprising 17 goals and 169 targets. These goals represent a pledge to achieve a sustainable world by 2030, leaving no one behind.

Our Approach to the SDGs

Since its establishment in 2006, the Market Enterprise Group has operated as an “optimization-oriented trading company working toward a sustainable society.” We provide optimal and sustainable choices not only to consumers but also to society as a whole, in response to evolving social challenges and changing external environments such as education, economics, and the natural environment. Among the 17 SDG goals, we are actively advancing initiatives through our core online-based reuse business, particularly aligning with Goal 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production” and Goal 17 “Partnerships for the Goals.” These efforts involve promoting a circular economy and collaborating with diverse external partners.

The Online-Based Reuse Business

In Japan, approximately 13.56 million units of the four major household appliances become unwanted and discarded annually. Through our online-based reuse business operations, we handled approximately 76,000 units (in the same four categories) between July 2014 and June 2020, achieving CO2 reductions equivalent to 12,600 tons.
Furthermore, through “Oikura,” Japan's largest matching platform connecting sellers with reuse shops nationwide, we contribute to reducing waste generation by reusing latent assets and promoting the development of a circular economy—the foundation for building a sustainable society.

Specialized Equipment & Machinery,

High-quality Japanese agricultural machinery, construction machinery, and medical equipment are exported and reused in over 80 countries worldwide through our company. By promoting the use of high-quality, cost-effective used equipment, we will continue to contribute to infrastructure development and industrial growth in various countries and regions, not only in developing nations.

Musical Instrument Donation Furusato Tax Program

We are implementing Japan’s first initiative, the “Musical Instrument Donation Furusato Tax Program,” in collaboration with 26 municipalities, including Inabe City, Mie Prefecture. We collect unused musical instruments donated from across Japan and, through our company, donate them to schools and music groups facing shortages. This initiative utilizes the “Furusato Tax System,” under which donors receive tax deductions based on the appraised value of the instruments. To date, we have delivered more than 380 instruments. We will continue expanding this initiative to other municipalities, promoting fair, high-quality education and enhancing access to quality learning opportunities.

Proposing a “Lifestyle of Not Throwing Things Away” to Reduce Waste Disposal and Build a Circular Society

We partner with municipalities to promote the reuse of potential assets lying idle in homes, utilizing services like our “Oikura” platform. For residents, this increases the option to “reuse,” leading to reduced waste disposal volumes and lower associated costs for the entire community. Moving forward, we will continue to propose a “lifestyle of not throwing things away” through public-private collaboration, aiming for a circular economy where necessary items reach those who need them.

Collaboration with Investigative Authorities

Through collaboration with investigative and public authorities, we reduce illegal transactions and contribute to the elimination of crime. Over the four years from fiscal year 2016 to fiscal year 2020, our company provided investigative cooperation in more than 310 cases. In 2018, we received letters of appreciation from the Chiba Kita Police Station in Chiba Prefecture and the Miyagi Prefectural Police Headquarters. We will continue to contribute to the promotion of a peaceful society through collaboration and information exchange with investigative and public authorities.

Participation in the Cabinet Office's “Regional Revitalization SDGs Public-Private Partnership Platform”

We participate in the “Regional Revitalization SDGs Public-Private Partnership Platform” operated by the Cabinet Office. This platform, established by the Cabinet Office, aims to promote SDGs initiatives domestically and further drive regional revitalization through public-private collaboration. Beyond disseminating our own information, we strive to contribute to regional revitalization and the advancement of the SDGs through information exchange and collaboration with participating organizations.
